Environmental Stewardship

Improving community health also means reducing our impact on the environment. More than a virtuous habit, it also results in cost savings—savings that can help reduce future health care costs.

Carilion New River Valley Medical Center’s seven-acre solar field, completed in 2018, now supplies 17 percent of the hospital’s electricity at an estimated savings of $1.5 million over the next 20 years. Also, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital was named Appalachian Power’s “Energy Efficiency Champion” for using LED bulbs to reduce our electric bill by 2.9 million kWh each year.
